Indonesian telco invests in Stratospheric Platforms’ 5G-in-the-sky

High-altitude 4G-5G basestation company Stratospheric Platforms (SPL) has received investment from the largest telecommunication infrastructure company in Indonesia, PT Profesional Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Protelindo).

Its value was described as “over seven figures” by a spokesman for the company.

SPL’s aim is to create hydrogen-powered aircraft which carry multi-beam 5G basestations that can each cover thousands of square km. Indonesia is spread over 17,000 islands and 1.9million square km.

“This strategic partnership and investment will enable SPL to explore with Protelindo development of a high-altitude platform to address Indonesia’s challenging topography,” according to SPL.

The aim is for the aircraft to cover 15,000km2 with links at up to 200Mbit/s.

Last month, Cambridge (UK) based SPL, announced a deal with BT to ground-test prototype phased-array antennas.
